Interview – XANDRIA avec Steven Wussow & Dianne van Giersbergen ( English / Fr )

Hello Steven & Dianne, thank you for taking the time to answer questions for the webzine In Ton Metal.

The band was created in 1994. After a split in 1997, the band wad  refounded in 1999. There were slight changes into the lineup with the years. You arrived in 2013, how were you recruited by the band?

Steven: I was doing a lot of sessionwork before I joined Xandria.  One day I read an article that this Band from Bielefeld is looking for a bassplayer. As  I was looking for a band to join permanently anyway I decided to give a shot and wrote a mail to the bands management. I was invited for an audition, but had to pass on this one as I was about to become father for the 1st time during one of the bands already planed tours. So I called again and left a note that if they would still need a bassplayer AFTER this tour, I would be in. Well, halfway through this one specific tour I got a call, drove up to Bielefeld in the middle of a fucking blizzard and got the job. 4 weeks later I played my first show in Moskau.

Your’re the 4th bassist of the band, do you think beeing the godd choice for the coming years ?

Steven: Well, I hope so. Hahaha… You never know where live will take you, but I am feeling very comfortable in my position. When I joined Xandria I got a second family with Dianne, the boys and our crew. So, there`s absolutely no need to change that!

Theater of Dimensions, the new opus, will be released on January 27th, 2017. How was the recording?

Steven: It was almost going TO relaxed. No drama, no nightmares, we made it in time… So I will take it as good sign!
I noticed that Dianne Van Giersbergen made a duet with Zaher

Zaher Zorgati, singer of Myrath and also the appearence of Björn Strid from Soilwrk. How were these recordings? (Question for Dianne)

Dianne: We’re very proud to have not one or two but even four very talented guest singers on the album! Bjorn ‘strid’ Speed from Soilwork, Zaher Zorgati from Myrath, Ross Tompson from Van Canto and last but not least Henning Basse from Firewind and Mayan. Well what to say about them? Each of them brings their very own and unique sound to our album which enriches our album with even more colour that we could have foreseen. They all recorded at their own studios but that did not make any difference tot he result! Those who haven’t checked it out surely must.

Who wrote the lyrics of this new album?
Steven:  Just like on Fire & Ashes Marco and Dianne both wrote some lyrics. Having 2 that good lyricists in a band is pure luxury!

Which theme was broached for this new opus, and who had the idea of?

Dianne:  Well there is not one big theme that ties all songs together lyrically. Musically we wanted to continue in the style we’ve been composing in ever since Never World’s End but add a few surprised here and there, give the songs a bit more edge and widen our musical horizons so to say. Having the guest singers on board already gave us a great push in that direction but co-writing with Joost van den Broek who also produced the album surely opened doors, visions and soundscapes that we ourselves might not have stumbled on.
On the lyrical side Marco and I write about different topics and have a different style. While he might give you a lyric in which he portrays his vision of our now a days society (We Are Murderers (We All))  I tend to write my lyrics inpired by more personal situations. The lyrics to “Where the Heart is Home” for example tell the listener all about the other side of touring: the side where you have to leave your home, the ones your heart belongs to and say goodbye to them for a long time. Touring is great! Don’t get me wrong, but there is always this feeling of sadness when you know you have to leave home again.

Your favorite song into this album?

Steven: Only one song? I have to name at least 2! So… if I have to choose it would  be the title track “Theater Of Dimensions” & “Burn Me” “Theater..” because it combines the whole album in one song and “Burn Me” because it so much fun to play. A nice Rock`N`Roll Asskicker

At which age did you start to play music and how did come this passion?

Steven: I started back in 1992 at the age of 13 and I am playing live since 1993. Damn I am getting old. Playing live is the thing I love most about making music. I always tried to play at least 30 shows a year… the road became my second home.

Did you imagine to play one day in such a band as Xandria ?

Steven: Well as I already said I always played in Bands. I have been on the road for almost 20 years before I joined Xandria. Sometimes in bigger, sometimes in smaller bands. I have never done it to be the biggest Rockstar in the world. I am doing this, because this is what I love and because this is maybe the only thing I am quite good in… believe me I am for example a goddamn lousy footballplayer!

Which was your reaction when you had known you would be the new bassist ?

Steven: I was happy! Of course! You don`t get an opportunity like this that often 😉

I have noticed that you have a very worked style on stage. Who chooses your costumes?

Steven: We all choose them for ourselves. Of course you always have to keep an eye on the whole appearance of the band. In the end you can wear every color you want… as long as it`s black.

With which artist would you like to make a duet or a collaboration ?

Dianne: Oh I get this question so often and I always anwer it with other names, just because there are too many beautiful voices in the world that I would love to share a song with. But then this time let me say ‘Damian Rice’. The way this man is able to sing straight from the heart is just breathtaking and I would love to join him in one of his songs or maybe a new composition.

Your most beautiful encounter during a concert, or outside ?

Dianne: This is simply: the fans! Whereever we go there are people waiting for us and that is the best encounter, though I would like to call it ‘gift’ ever.

Do you live on your music, or do you have a job apart the band?

Steven: When we are not on Tour we have to earn some extra euros to cover all our expenses. Just like most musicians in these days. But hey who knows, maybe we can skip this pretty soon. I dearly hope so! And if not, well… we just keep on going. Everythings cool.

An anecdote that you have lived alone or with the group ?

Dianne: Haha well too many things happen while touring! But a nice trivia might be that the boys (all being German and me being Dutch) call me their ‘Dutchess’.

Have you planned dates for shows in France in 2017 ?

Steven: Yes, we a hope to be able to do some more shows in France than in the past where we`ve only been able to play in Paris. We are just checking offers and putting together the next European tour. So stay tuned 😉

This interview is coming to its end, do you have a message for your fans, and for the webzine readers ?

Steven: I want thank each and every one of you for their love & support! We really, really appreciate that! So, see you somewhere out there on our “Tour Of Dimensions”!

(question pour Dianne ) ?

Donc, si je dois choisir, ça serait la chanson titre ‘Theater Of Dimensions’ & ‘Burn Me’. ‘Theater..
