We meet the group Sonata Arctica after a passage on Paris, January 27, 2017. The band stops in Lyon to offer us a much-anticipated concert by the fans and myself.
The seats sold out very quickly, for this evening at Ninkasi Kao.
Sonata Arctica presents his latest album, « The Ninth Hour« , released in 2016.
On reaching the hall, I see an immense file stretching out to the end of the street. Fans of the group have responded and wear for the occasion, t-shirts, goodies, etc … to the effigy of the band.
The line is moving fast, the security service takes us in. I try to make my way among the public. Fans are stuck together, to see Sonata Arctica more closely. Once placed, I do not move any more 😀
The show starts with Triosphere a good band of power / progressive metal, which comes straight from Norway. The band presents his new album: « The Heart Of The Matter« .
Kenneth Tarneby on drums, Tor Ole Byberg on rhythm guitar, Marius Bergesen on solo guitar, and the pretty Ida Haukland on bass and vocals, a perfect combo.
The group launches the first title « My Fortress« , which announces the color, a fairly speedy song, such as « Steal Away The Light » at its beginning, but sweeter thereafter.
The hoarse voice of Ida goes well with this melodic title. On the next one, « Driven« , Marius Bergesen, puts his voice on a chorus with Hispanic accents. A style that stands out from the other bands I’ve seen so far. The title « The Sphere » is rather old-school rock.
The public, conquered, asks for more.
The following titles, « Relentless » and « Trinity » are very speedy with riffs that unwind. Then come more melodic pieces like « As I Call« .
Follows « Breathless » a softer one, on which Ida ensures a magnificent vocal performance. The show ends with “Heart’s Dominion”.
The public ovations the group, a very good performance to start the evening.
Small break to change the material. A simplistic decoration is being prepared for the next band.
It is time to receive the second support band of the evening: Striker, which comes from Canada
Striker presents his latest album, released in 2016 by Napalm Records under the name: « Stand In The Fire« , which was very much appreciated by fans
The band arrives excited, the audience is present 😀
Dan Cleary, the singer, launches the first track: « Born to Lose« , which announces the musical style of the band: heavy metal / rock, with a look of the 80s.
Adam Brown, the drummer, shows he is happy to be there, the audience feels his motivation.
The show continues with the title: « Crossroads », a very heavy metal speed style song. The audience enjoys it and moves in all directions.
Each track that follows is very speed, very rock, the audience is hot like boiling water.
The set ends, new pause to allow the installation of Sonata Arctica equipment.
The band is very anticipated by its fans. During the installation the audience shouts in chorus « Sonata! « . It’s impressive to hear.
It is now time to welcome Sonata Arctica, a group founded in 1996, from Finland. The band is on a world tour to present their new album released in 2016: « The Ninth Hour« . On the cover of the album, as on some other, you can see a wolf. Tony, the singer, is a defender of the animal cause, and especially the wolves
Elias, Passi, Henrik, Tommy arrive on stage under the applause of the fans and the audience.
Tony makes his entrance with a big smile on the introduction of « We Are What We Are« .
The show begins with their first title: « Closer To An Animal« , a fairly quiet one. Tony is very gestural in his way of singing, which delights fans in front of the stage.
The titles follow: « Life« , « The Wolves Die Young » (title that speaks of wolves) taken in chorus by the audience.
Then follow « In Black and White« , and many other very good pieces. The setlist is varied, with old songs and new ones, including « Full Moon » one of the well known titles of Sonata Arctica, pure pleasure in live. Not to mention « Tallulah« .
But also more festive, progressive songs, some with small pop tones, not to mention « Do not Say A Word« , and the famous « Vodka Song« , on which the audience jumped in rhythm at the request of Tony.
An emotionally great and unforgettable concert. The fans were conquered, and me too, for my first concert of Sonata Arctica.
The concert ends, and the room empties gently. Many fans are waiting for members of the group at the exit, for a signing session.
Nous retrouvons le groupe Sonata Arctica après un passage sur Paris, le 27 janvier 2017. Le groupe s’arrête à Lyon pour nous offrir un concert très attendu par les fans et moi-même.
Les places se sont vendues très vite, le sold out s’annonce encore une fois, pour cette soirée au Ninkasi Kao.
Sonata Arctica vient nous présenter son dernier album : « The Ninth Hour », sorti en 2016.
Arrivée à la salle, je vois une file immense qui s’allonge jusqu’au bout de la rue. Les fans du groupe ont répondu présent et portent pour l’occasion, t-shirts, goodies, etc … à l’effigie du groupe
La file avance vite, le service de sécurité nous fait entrer. J’essaie de me frayer un passage parmi le public. Les fans sont bien collés entre eux, pour voir Sonata arctica de plus près. Une fois placée, je ne bouge plus. 😀

La voix rauque de Ida se marie bien à ce titre assez mélodique. Sur le titre suivant, « Driven », Marius Bergesen, pose sa voix sur un chœur aux accents hispaniques. Un style qui se démarque des autres groupes que j’ai pu voir jusque-là. Le titre suivant « The Sphere » est plutôt rock old-school.

Chaque titre qui suit est très speed, très rock, le public est chaud bouillant.
Le set se termine, nouvelle pause pour permettre la mise en place du matériel de Sonata Arctica.
Le groupe est très attendu se soir, par ses fans. Durant l’installation le public crie en cœur « Sonata ! ». C’est impressionnant à entendre.
Il est maintenant temps d’accueillir Sonata Arctica, groupe fondé en 1996, qui nous vient de Finlande. Le groupe est en tournée mondiale pour présenter son nouvel album sortie en 2016 : « The Ninth Hour ». Sur la pochette de l’album comme sur d’autre, on peut voir un loup. Les titres s’enchainent : « Life », « The Wolves Die Young » (titre qui parle de loups ) repris en chœur par le public.
Suivent « In Black and White », et nombre d’autres très bons morceaux. La setlist est variée, avec d’anciens morceaux et de nouveaux, dont « Full Moon » un des titres bien connus de Sonata Arctica, un pur plaisir en live. Sans oublier « Tallulah ».
Mais également des morceaux plus festifs, progressifs, avec des tons un peu pop, sans oublier « Don’t Say A Word », et la fameuse « Vodka Song », sur laquelle le public a sauté en rythme à la demande de Tony.
Un concert émotionnellement grandiose et inoubliable. Les fans était conquis et moi aussi, pour mon premier concert de Sonata Arctica.
Le concert se termine, puis la salle se vide doucement. Nombreux sont les fans qui attendent les membres du groupe à la sortie pour une séance de dédicace.
